Watch Atlas the Backflip Robot from Boston Dynamics

A Boston-based robotics company has taught their robot how to jump and backflip better than a human. Cue all the jokes about the inevitable demise of the human race.

Boston Dynamics has an impressive lineup of robotic machines, including Spot and Spot Mini, which look like headless dogs; Handle, which has a praying-mantis-on-wheels thing going on; and Atlas, its most humanoid creation. Atlas’ torso, arms, and legs are programmed to perform tasks that require dynamic movement and balance—walking, going down stairs, picking up boxes, not falling down when pushed. Now, the robot has added jumping onto boxes and backflipping to its skill set. It looks damn near human while doing it, too.
